The Chair of Circular Engineering for Architecture (CEA) develops research on matching reused architectural materials & projects through digitalization for circularity. Building design projects are often complex, multi-variant problems addressed by numerous parties working in separate silos. The construction industry can learn from other sectors about adopting digital technologies and circular strategies. Automating the reuse of materials in architecture can fill this gap by connecting actors across the value chain.
PhD student Kasimir Forth has earned his doctorate from TU Munich with research on «BIM-based semantic enrichment for environmental analyses using Large Language Models» and is starting his PostDoc position with the CEA Lab
On 19 December at 6pm, the exhibition AAA Experiments opens for the second time. We present the results of the collaboration between ETH Zurich and Kunsthalle Zurich.
Two flagship projects from Innosuisse have been launched at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at ETH Zurich with the aim of transforming the Swiss construction industry in a sustainable way: While "Swircular" lays the foundation for a circular construction industry, "Think Earth" enables regenerative construction with timber and earth.
PhD student Brandon Byers has earned his doctorate with research on "Circular Construction Supply Chains: Implementing Decentralized Building Product Passports for Tracking and Tracing Reused Materials".
At the intersection of computational design and digital fabrication, Marirena’s work investigates new potentials of material properties and design processes, and crafts synergistic relations between humans and machines during the making process.
SBE25
We are thrilled to announce the Sustainable Built Environment Conference (SBE25), which will be held from June 25 to 27, 2025. The conference topic is “Shaping Tomorrow: Systems Thinking in the Built Environment”.

Digital Circular Economy (DiCE) Lab is a knowledge sharing and networking platform, founded by Sultan Çetin (TU Delft) and Catherine De Wolf (ETH Zurich) in 2021 with the idea of bringing academia, practice, and policy together to discuss the greatest challenges of today's society. We propose to bring all stakeholders across the industries together to combine digital technologies with circular principles to tackle the challenges posed by the linear economy. DiCE Lab webinars offer unique opportunities to discuss digital innovations in depth from different perspectives. Each month one technology is in the spotlight. From companies that offer digital solutions to researchers who develop innovative ideas join us.
The Library of Reuse (LoR) is a digital platform dedicated to promoting sustainable construction practices by focusing on the reuse of building materials. It highlights pioneering individuals, projects, and products involved in circular construction. The platform features books, films, and podcasts that document real-world applications of material reuse and innovative approaches to reduce waste. Established through a collaboration between experts from ETH Zurich (Prof. Catherine De Wolf, Anna Buser, and Dr. Jennifer Bartmess), baubüro in situ (Barbara Buser), and the University of Liechtenstein (Prof. Daniel Stockhammer), LoR aims to share research and practical knowledge to drive the circular economy in construction.
