Prof. Dr. Catherine De Wolf co-chairs the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) Symposium 2024 at ETH Zurich

IASS has focused on advancing design, engineering, materials and methods since its foundation in 1959. IASS 2024 will be co-chaired by four ETH Zurich professors - Prof. Dr. Catherine De Wolf, Prof. Dr. Philippe Block, Prof. Dr. Walter Kaufmann, and Prof. Dr. Jacqueline Pauli.

This symposium, themed "Redefining the Art of Structural Design" focuses on the historic and ongoing intersection of technology and informed expression in structural design. It aims to expand the classic characteristics of structural design - Efficiency, Economy, and Elegance - together with Environment and Ethics, in order to address the critical challenges of our time.

The opening keynote was given by Prof. Dr. John Ochsendorf from MIT and emphasises two additional characteristics crucial in this field: Education and Entrepreneurship. Other keynote speakers include David Campbell P.E., Honorary Member of the IASS and Engineer; Anupama Kundoo, Architect focused on sustainable design; Neil Thomas MBE, Structural Engineer and Founder of Atelier One; Mariam Issoufou, Architect and Founder of Mariam Issoufou Architects; Laurent Ney, Structural Engineer and Architect, Founder of Ney & Partners; Prof. Dr. Sarah Springman DBE, former rector of ETH Zurich.
