Congratulations to Dr. Forth on successfully completing his PhD defense
PhD student Kasimir Forth has earned his doctorate from TU Munich with research on «BIM-based semantic enrichment for environmental analyses using Large Language Models» and is starting his PostDoc position with the CEA Lab
Kasimir's dissertation focuses on automating the process of semantic enrichment based on open Building Information Models (BIM) for various environmental analyses using Large Language Models (LLMs). It proposes a method for enriching BIM models by matching textually similar data from a database and enriching missing information for the use cases of Life Cycle Assessments, Material Passports, and Building Energy Performance Simulations. Several pre-trained or fine-tuned LLMs are tested, and different fine-tuning strategies improve the matching accuracy.
Finally, the dissertation introduces a decision-making framework for selecting materials and elements using open BIM data formats, such as Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), or BIM Collaboration Format (BCF). It integrates visualization strategies to present embodied greenhouse gas emissions and their uncertainties, enabling informed decision-making by stakeholders without LCA expertise. These methods for semantic enrichment and decision support were validated using real-world case studies.
