Dr. Claudio Martani is an Oberassistent at the Chair of Circular Engineering for Architecture (CEA) at ETH Zürich, a role he has held since February 2025.
Prior to this, he served as an Assistant Professor at the Purdue School of Construction Management Technology (2022-2024), where he was also an ICON-affiliated faculty member and Director of the Laboratory for Future-Ready Infrastructure (FuRI Lab). At FuRI Lab, Dr. Martani focused on developing strategies to reduce risks in construction and infrastructure and on designing flexible, resilient, and responsive systems to manage future uncertainties.
Dr. Martani's previous experience includes serving as a Research Associate at the IM Group at the IBI, D-BAUG of ETH Zürich (2015-2021) and at the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC) at the University of Cambridge (2013-2015). During his time at Cambridge, he was involved with the Smart Cities Interoperability Committee of the British Standards Institution (BSI) and contributed to the creation of UK standards for smart cities. He also served as an Affiliated Postdoctoral Member at Clare Hall College, Cambridge.
Dr. Martani holds a PhD in Technology and Design for the Built Environment (TePAC) from Politecnico di Milano (2013), as well as an MSc in Building Management and a BSc in Architecture from the same institution. He is also an alumnus of the Collegio di Milano, an interdisciplinary honours programme with a competitive admission process and a strong extracurricular focus.
Additionally, Dr. Martani was appointed a MIT-Italy Fellow at the Senseable City Laboratory and served as a visiting researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute’s Virtual Development and Training Centre (VDTC).

BSc in Architecture (Politecnico di Milano). Thesis: 3D model of the venetian Basilic of San Marco’s beams system based on a laser scanner survey.
MSc in Building Management Engineering (Politecnico di Milano). Thesis: Knowledge management system for planning and managing the maintenance of real estates: a propose for a new methodology
PhD in Building Environment Project and Technology (Politecnico di Milano). Thesis: Risk management in architectural design. The control of uncertainty over objectives.
